7 Things to do when you wake up in the morning to make life a little bit easier.

Early Mornings are the worst!

It starts when your alarm shatters that wonderful sleep you were having into thousands of tiny little pieces. From there on out it only gets worst. You’re groggy and now you have to pull yourself out of your cosy little duvet fortress into what feels like the sodding arctic circle. Why though? Because you kind of have a job to go to that pays for all of those luxuries you love to enjoy. You start to ask yourself why on earth you didn’t go to sleep earlier. And whether or not duvet days are actually a thing and it acceptable to have one.

When it comes to sleeping, i’m the best. Although i have a tendency to go to bed far later than i should, despite having to get up at stupid o’clock in the morning. Unfortunately i don’t work around the corner to my house instead i have the pleasure of the London commute every morning. Which makes early mornings a part of my working life. Sigh.

Thats a pretty shocking statistic given Sleep is just as important for the Human Body as diet and Exercise. Yet it is the first thing we sacrifice every day. If you don’t start your morning on the right foot, you could spend the rest of the day feeling rushed, irritable and behind schedule. As they say If you win the morning you win the day. So rather than allow the day to take charge of you. You should be taking charge of your day by implementing a morning routine that will benefit your health inside and out. Not only that but it will maximise your potential for the day and keep you on track.

Now i’m the last person who should be telling you how to take charge of your morning. Considering i’m forever tired. Believe me the struggle is real but sometimes you just need that little push to get on the right track. By sticking with a morning routine in a couple of weeks you’ll find yourself hopping out of bed in the morning. While feeling renewed and looking forward to what lies ahead. They say it takes 2 months or 66 days to form a habit. So it is entirely doable to make a morning routine your thing.

Why not Start Now?

Sometimes your lifestyle and routine can change which means you have to adapt to your new commitments. Maybe you’ve taken on a new hobby so need to re-allocate your time. Or perhaps you haven’t had a morning routine up until now and you want more organisation in your life. Whatever your reasoning, there is always ways to change and benefit from being in control of your time.

I’ve recently made a few changes to my lifestyle so i’m in the same boat as most of you. Re-learning how to cope with said changes and juggle my routine hasn’t been easy, it actually quite exhausting. Not only am i trying to eat healthier but also to get in the gym on top of my already busy working life. And it really has made me realise the importance of sleep and having a routine that works for me. It is super important to find a happy medium. That allows you to achieve everything you had planned to without becoming too overwhelmed and giving up your beauty sleep.

So in this weeks post i’m going to be talking about 7 things to do in the morning to make your life that little bit easier and help shake off that tired feeling.

Plan ahead – Start the Night Before.

Before i get into some tips on how to craft your morning into the best it can be. There are somethings that you can do before you go to bed that can actually make your morning a little easier. Trust me they really do help.

Most people are pushed for time in the morning. When you wake up you set your alarm based on how much time you need to get yourself ready for the day. We don’t account for any eventualities from the norm that can happen during this time. And believe me, you will be surprised how many things can present theirselves. Any of these can throw you off and put you slightly behind.

Evening Tip 1 – Gather everything you need to take with you to the office in advance.

As part of my evening routine, i always get my lunch together the night before. Just so that i don’t forget anything and to maximise time available in the morning. I tend to mass produce my dinner for the evening. By doing so i have another serving available to take for lunch the next day. Before i start the important stuff, i gather my lunch and any snacks that i will eat through the day and put these together in the fridge. This makes it easier to transfer them to my lunch bag in the morning. That way i’m ready to rock and roll without forgetting anything.

The same goes for other essential things. I always make sure my bag is full of the essentials i need before i go to bed. My Train Ticket, Work Pass, Headphones and anything else that i might need on that particular day. Theres nothing worse than leaving the house and realising you have forgotten something important. So if you have something essential that needs to be with you for the day that is not being charged overnight pop it in your bag the night before.

Evening Tip 2 – Lay out your outfit in advance

Outfit planning can be stressful especially if you have an important meeting or event you are attending that day. Maybe its not even work related and you’re meeting friends for a bite to eat and a drink. Looking your best is important so plan in advance.

Every night before i go to sleep i trawl through my wardrobe and find an outfit that i am going to wear the next day. Sometimes i have an idea of what i want to wear, more often than not i have choices to make. When i’m happy with my choice, I hang said outfit on the outside of my wardrobe. So its easily accessible and visible so i know its one thing ticked off my list. This means it is one less thing to do and one less stress in the morning. Because we all know how time consuming outfit planning can be.

It takes a small amount of time to do this and you will thank yesterday’s you for being so organised and knowing you look your best. Sometimes when we are groggy, we can make less than desirable choices. I can’t tell you the amount of times in the darkness of a morning, i have thought navy was black and vice versa. Do yourself a kindness so you can own your outfit game.

Evening Tip 3 – Shower your stresses away.

Showers and Bath’s can be really beneficial and help us relax after a long hard day. There is nothing better than letting the hot water help you unwind. And soothe any uptight feelings or tensions you have in your body and mind following a busy day.

Personally I always shower the night before i go to bed because getting naked in a cold bathroom in the morning is not fun. As a perpetual cold person, i feel the cold 99% of the time. Even when most would think it’s an acceptable temperature. Not only is it much more comfortable for me to shower in a cosy bathroom that has been heated throughout the evening. But it’s makes it so much easier to drift off to sleep after a nice hot shower.

There are also other benefits to this method. I am currently trying to use less heat on my hair, to grow it into a longer and thicker mane. Another bonus of showering at night is that i can leave my hair to dry naturally overnight. I don’t have to apply too much heat or deal with it too much in the morning. Other than taming it into a more presentable ensemble of course. Frazzled hair is not a good look so keep it looking lustrous and healthy. I find hair to be much more manageable when its left to dry naturally.

Evening Tip 4 – Give your face some love: Take your makeup off and cleanse your skin

Taking your make up off after a long day can feel like a slog and a complete and utter inconvenience. Especially when you have spent so much time putting it on and slaying the makeup game all day. However Sleeping in makeup is like murder to your pores. It can leave your pores blocked and is a breeding ground for bacteria. We shed millions of skin cells every day and the vital renewing process often happens when we sleep. If you leave makeup on overnight it gets in the way of this process. Not only can it can trap dead skin cells and stop the skins natural exfoliation process. But it also stops the right amount of oxygen getting to the skin which allows for the build up of bacteria. This usually leads to spots and a dull complexion.

Want your skin game on point then do yourself a favour and remove your makeup before bed. Usually i remove my makeup with soap in the shower but it will depend on if i’m washing my hair or not. If i am on my day break then i will just shower without washing my hair. This means i don’t remove my makeup in said shower through fear or getting my hair wet.

At 27 Years Old i do still use Makeup wipes to take off my face. They are easy, convenient and a time saver. However there are so many different products on the market to make this an easy win that you are spoilt for choice. So break out the products and love your face. Your skin will love you forever and you will reap the rewards of healthy glowing skin.

Start your day right – Morning Tips

Now that you have a few things scheduled in the evening let’s get to the good stuff. The little tidbits that you can put into practice in the morning to ensure you wake up refreshed and ready to get on with the day.

Morning Tip 1 – Stop Hitting the Snooze Button

We’ve all been there, setting our alarm that little bit earlier. Just to allow for some snooze bashing to ease yourself out of sleep. Whilst it may feel like a kinder way to get yourself out of bed, it is actually not a healthy way to wake up. Snoozing allows your body to start another phase of sleep. Which we will inevitably not reap the benefits of, because we will be shaken from it far too soon. So do yourself a favour and stop the snoozing.

To do this try moving your Alarm away from your bed so that it is completely out reach. By doing so this ensures that you have to physically get out of bed to turn the damn thing off. And let’s be honest once you’ve braved the arctic circle its not so easy to get back into bed and accept you’ll have to do it all over again just to hit the snooze button. Sometimes you will but sometimes you know its so not worth it. I don’t know about you but i can’t tell you the amount of times i’ve woken up feeling ok at my first alarm but far more tired after a couple of snoozes. So do yourself a favour and cut it out.

Morning Tip 2 – Let Some Light into your life and Room

Once you’ve got past alarm gate and getting yourself out of Bed. One of the first things you should do is open your curtains and let some natural light in to the room. Opening your curtains can really help you gradually wake up if you’re still feeling kind of groggy with Sleep. The body recognises natural light and it helps your body clock get into sync little bit quicker. If you don’t have black out blinds in your room, have you noticed on weekends you tend to wake up a little earlier than you liked? This is not solely down to our body clock, in fact its actually down to your body recognising the morning light as the natural signal that we should be waking up. This in turn gives your body clock the signal that it’s time to wake up and tackle the day.

Once the curtains are open, you should continue the good vibes by making your bed. Yes it can feel like a chore but if you want to accelerate your motivation and productivity this can really help. Untidy beds can make you feel really disorganised and dishevelled. There is something rewarding about making your bed. Not only is it one thing ticked off your list but it will make you feel more happier and more refreshed by having tidy surroundings. It gives you a small sense of accomplishment and really it only takes less than 1 minute. There is nothing better than sitting on the end of a made bed for 5 minutes and letting the light saturate the room. It’s kind of soothing.

Morning Tip 3 – Get your exercise on

Now this one isn’t going to be for everyone. Some people prefer to exercise later in the day when they have fuelled their body correctly and to de-stress after a hard day. Endorphins are a great little pick me up. But the main reason is that most people find it hard to get out of bed and function let alone do a a small workout.

But for those of you that are early birds and can muster the energy to get your heart rate up in some form then exercising is a great way to start the day. Now when i say exercise this doesn’t mean you have to get yourself down a gym, there are a variety of ways to get your heart rate going in the morning. It could be a brisk walk, home work out or a morning spin class. You can choose whatever method you prefer. The fact that you are taking the time to get moving is amazing in itself.

Yes a workout will be difficult in the morning but the more you do it the more it will get a little easier over time. With every work out you overcome you’ll also feel a great sense of accomplishment after you’ve finished. Knowing that you’re up and out there before everybody else, and that you’ve accomplished something so early in the morning, will really lift your spirits and spur you to succeed with the rest of your day.

If you’re not used to working out, start off slow and build your way up – you’ll still feel the same sense of accomplishment. 

Morning Tip 4- Freshen up your face and body get rid of the remnants of Sleep

Still feeling like your eyes are 2 pissholes in the snow and your skin is all dull looking? Yep you’re not alone, i don’t think there is anyone who can wake up early and not feel the effects of the sandman. There is no better way to feel fresh faced than by getting the blood flowing to those cheeks and peepers with a facial wash. The first thing i do when i get out of my duvet fortress is stumble into the bathroom and wake myself up with a good old fashioned face wash. I use Soap & Glory PEACHES AND CLEAN Deep Cleansing Milk. This product is a god send its also good for sensitive skin. The formula not only melts away makeup but helps purify and softens the skin of any impurities for a smooth, luminous complexion.

On top of this, i give my body a quick freshen up in the important places to ensure i’m feeling squeaky clean for the day ahead. Some of you may choose to shower in the morning which is also perfectly fine. When the weather gets warmer i tend to shower in the morning as well as my evening shower. Whatever your preference make sure you are feeling funky and fresh.

So get yourself in the bathroom and run yourself some warm water/shower and give your face and body some love. It will get the blood flowing which will make you feel more awake and the facial wash will get rid of any puffiness around your eyes. It’s a sure fire way to wake yourself up.

Morning Tip 5 – Grab a Glass of Water

Hydration is essential especially after hours of sleeping. Not only does it increase your energy but it also kick starts your metabolism into high gear. This is especially good news if you are trying to lose weight as you want your metabolism to be strong through out the day. Drinking water in the morning helps rehydrate your body after a long period of dehydration and helps you to fire on all cylinders to put that spring in your step. So go Grab yourself a Cold Glass of Water and relish in the benefits. It honestly does kick start your body the right way and leaves you feeling refreshed and ready to go. Your Skin and digestive system will thank you for it. So will your boss when you’re head and shoulders above the rest owning the work day.

Morning Tip 6 – Make yourself a good cup of Joe.

I don’t know about you but the smell of coffee is enough to make me do a happy dance. The delicious taste, the comforting feel of a warm mug in your hands, the rich aroma, and the energy boost to tackle the day. Now usually this would be lower on peoples list alongside breakfast however as i’m already in the kitchen and have breakfast when i get to work i tend to start a brew right a way.

Coffee can help people feel less tired and increase energy levels. It is packed full of antioxidants and can actually help reduce your waistline. Studies show that caffeine can increase your metabolic rate by 3-11%, helping you burn a little more fat on a daily basis. So if you’re starting your day with a glass of water and a cup of coffee, you’re winning. Another bonus is that Caffeine significantly improves your mental alertness with its stimulating properties. It specifically affects the areas of the brain responsible for memory and concentration. So that cup of joe is pretty good for you.

Morning Tip 7 – Take 10-15 minutes to Mentally Prepare for your day

One of the key things that many successful people incorporate into their morning routine is to take some time out of their morning to focus on theirselves and their wellbeing. Some people like to spend some time revelling in the quietness of the morning. Others may spend 5-10 mins meditating or reading a book. Whatever it is they enjoy doing, take a quick break to focus your mind and relax.

Personally this is where i take 10 minutes to myself. I will sit down to enjoy my coffee while i do a quick check on the weather and the status of my trains. More often than not i will just sit there and enjoy my coffee and think over what i need to do for the day. It is entirely up to you how long you spend focusing on you. Maybe if you want to read a book or a magazine you may choose to spend 20-30 mins catching up. Just make sure you schedule a little more time into your morning.

The one thing you should try to avoid is Social media. Although 80% of smartphone users check their phone when they first wake up whether that be emails or their to do list. It is widely known that social media can have a detrimental effect on our mental health. Especially as given the current state of affairs, the bulk of what we see going on in the world is not happy or uplifting at all. It’s always something oozing doom and gloom. So if you do one thing in this 10-15 mins, don’t check the news or social media. The most important thing is you are doing something that you find relaxing and that benefit you emotionally and mentally.

The bottom line

There are so many ways to create and master a winning morning routine. But it doesn’t have to stop there, by taking some initiative and utilising your evening can also help alleviate some stresses from your morning. Hopefully, the above list will give you plenty of food for thought to help you own your perfect morning routine and keep the tiredness at bay.

By building these new habits, you’ll find that your days start happier and stronger. You’ll also discover that you’re more motivated and productive than ever before.
